New Male Residence for St. Thomas Infirmary More than 40male residents of the St. Thomas infirmary will be relocated to an upgraded and modern facilities by May next year. This was made possible following a contract signing between the Department of Local Government and Shine Construction & Equipment Rental for the construction of a new wing at the St. Thomas Infirmary. The contract is valued at Nineteen Million Six Hundred and Six Thousand One Hundred and Ninety Three dollars ($19,606,193.00) and is being financed by CHASE fund. This funding came about as a result of a submission made to CHASE by the Department of Local Government for funding to facilitate the implementation of an Infirmary Upgrading Project.
The Infirmary Upgrading Project seeks to effect comprehensive rehabilitation works which will not only provide more suitable and comfortable facilities for residents and staff, but will also enhance social interaction among the residents as well as improve the security arrangements. The works at the infirmary will involve the construction of a new male residential ward and will include concrete foundations, reinforced block wall, drywall partitioning, corrugated alu-steel roofing and porcelain tiles. It is anticipated that the new ward, when completed, will provide spacious, modern and functional rooms for approximately forty (40) male residents.
Shine Construction & Equipment Rental of 2 Red Hills Road, Morant Bay in St. Thomas was awarded the contract following a competitive bidding process carried out in accordance with the Government of Jamaica Handbook of Public Sector Procurement Procedures and the National Contract Commission. The Department secured a Forty Million Dollars ($40M) grant from the CHASE Fund; Twenty Million ($20M) each for St. Thomas and Hanover to effect the construction of two wards. The St. Thomas Infirmary construction project commenced on November 23, 2009 and is expected to last for six (6) months.
