HISTORY OF THE MUNICIPALITY

The community of Portmore with a population of over 200,000 consists of approximately sixty communities. It was part of the parish of St. Catherine but in June 2003 it became a new Municipality as a direct result of representation and agitation by community leaders who wanted Portmore to have a say in matters that affect their daily lives. The population is well educated, predominantly middle class and is organized into strong community groups which total sixty plus.
